ーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Echizen Washi is a Japanese paper made in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, which is one of the "three major Japanese papers" along with "Mino Washi" in Gifu Prefecture and "Tosa Washi" in Kochi Prefecture.
It is said that the goddess who appeared upstream of the river in the Okamoto district of Echizen City taught the villagers the technique of making paper.
…What? Goddess??
That's right, isn't it splendid!? :-)
About 1500 years ago, a beautiful goddess appeared upstream of this river and said, "This village is blessed with pure water, although there may be a shortage of rice fields and plowed fields. It would be nice to make a living by making paper with this water. "
The villagers were deeply moved and asked, "Who are you?", But disappeared while saying, "I am from this land."
Since then, villagers have begun making paper, which is believed to be the origin of Echizen Washi paper.
After that, they called this goddess "Kawakami Gozen" and worshiped at Okamoto Shrine.
This is the only "paper god" in Japan.
After that, with the spread of Buddhism, sutra copying became popular and the demand for paper increased. High-quality Echizen Japanese paper has come in handy and has come to be used nationwide.

Each piece is handmade by skilled craftsmen.
The three major raw materials for Japanese paper that have been used for a long time are mulberry, mitsumata, and ganpi.
This raw material is strained in a tank containing Abelmoschus manihot called "Neri".
"Neri" has a viscosity. It is necessary to evenly disperse the raw material fibers in water one by one in order to make beautiful paper.
Some craftsmen have become living national treasures. It was the late 8th Iwano Ichibei and 9th Iwano Ichibei, who also dedicated Japanese paper to the famous Louvre Museum.
